1. History

The C.I.R.G. was born in 1979 in Belgium (Braine-le-Château) after we made the following constatation : lapidary signs are present everywhere in the world, but their study were nearly inexistant because of lack of adaptated tools (classification system, representation method, ...). It was urgent (disparition of signs because of pollution and restaurations) to constitute a research group as international as possible and to allow regular confrontation of research results. Since 1979, international days have been organized regularly (Mons (Belgium, 1979), Nîmes (France, 1980), Saragosse (Spain, 1982), Cambrai (France, 1984), Pontevedra (Spain, 1986), Samoëns (France, 1988), Rochefort-sur-Mer (France, 1990), Hoepertingen (Belgium, 1992), Belley (France, 1994) and Mont-Sainte-Odile (France, 1996)). Some local and regional phenomen are shown during these days. The XI international days of glyptography are organized this year in Palma de Mallorca (Spain, July 1998).
